I have gotten so many friends hooked on the Loretta Young TV show that we are now meeting twice a month to watch and comment on episodes from her 1953-1961 run. And what a run! This package of scores of episodes in which she performed (although many of the episodes in the later six years of the show she merely hosted without appearing in) sort of leaves one breathless at the dramatic range of this outrageously talented actress, whether in melodramas, comedies, thrillers or spiritually uplifting fables. Personal favorites are "Christmas Stopover," "There for the Grace of God," "Earthquake" (Wow!), "Miss Ashley's Demon," "I Remember Rani" and of course the very first episode, the hilarious "Trial Run." Each one is like a min-movie, produced with the most professional care. It's no wonder than Loretta won three Emmys along the way. And I especially enjoy her choice of co-actors in many of these episodes, many of whom Loretta knew and acted with in her film career, or then-up and coming performers looking for TV exposure, like Ann Doran, Nana Bryant, Alex Nichol, Hugh O'Brien, George Nader, Jock Mahony. John Newland and Mabel Albertson. The remasterings are quite clean, though some have an occasional flaw, minor indeed. I can't recommend this set more, worth every penny. You'll want to watch favorite episodes over and over. And just be amazed at the variety and quality of these wondeful half-hour teleplays.
